Privacy notice

There are no accounts on this site, no forms, no comments, no newsletter and nothing for sale, so there is no way to hand it personal details by using it. Its own pages set no cookie. The server that delivers the pages keeps the ordinary logs that every web server keeps, for a limited time. Anyone who writes in by email supplies whatever they choose to put in the message, and nothing more is collected.

Any service provided by another company that loads on these pages is listed below, together with what it does here and where its own privacy notice is. If that list is empty, no such service loads.

When a page is requested, the hosting server notes the request in its log. The log holds the same fields as almost every web server’s: the network address the request came from, the date and time, the page asked for, the identification string the browser sends about itself, and the address of the page that linked here, if any.

Log entries are not combined with any other information and are not passed to anyone else, except where the law obliges the operator or the hosting provider to hand them over.

The only way to give this site information about yourself is to send an email or a letter. What arrives is your address, your name if you give it, and whatever the message says. It is used for one purpose: to reply, and to act on what you have raised, which is usually a correction or a question about an article.

Correspondence is kept for as long as the matter it concerns is open, and afterwards only where it is the record of a correction that was made. It is not added to any list, is not used to send anything unrequested, and is not shared.

The pages of this site set no cookie and store nothing in a visitor’s browser. The publishing software the site runs on sets a cookie only when the operator opens its editing screens, which visitors never do.

Where a service listed in the next section loads on a page, it may set cookies of its own under its own notice. Whether it does, and what for, is stated in that list.

Everything on these pages is served from the site’s own hosting except what is listed here. Each entry names the company, says what its service does on this site, and links to that company’s own privacy notice, which governs what it collects.

No service provided by another company loads on these pages: no analytics, no advertising tag, no embedded video, no fonts fetched from another company’s servers and no chat window.

Depending on where you live, the law may give you the right to ask what information is held about you, to have it corrected or erased, to object to its use, and to complain to a supervisory authority in your country. Those rights are yours whether or not this notice lists them, and where your local law provides more than this notice describes, the law prevails.

To exercise any of them, write to the address on the contact page. Say which right you are relying on and, if the request concerns an earlier message, the approximate date and the sending address, so that it can be traced. Requests are answered as quickly as they can be dealt with, and in any case within the period your local law allows.

The articles are written for adults who own or manage household networking equipment. Nothing on the site is aimed at children, nothing invites a child to supply information, and no information is knowingly collected from one. A parent who believes a child has written in can ask for the correspondence to be erased, and it will be.

The reviewed-on date shown above moves whenever this text changes. A change that alters what is collected or why is also recorded on the corrections page, so that the history can be seen rather than inferred.
